Grad School Timeline

Junior Year, First Semester
  • Think about prospective careers and whether additional education will be required
  • Talk to Career Services staff, faculty and family about professions and graduate school
  • Attend graduate school fairs.
Junior Year, Second Semester
Summer Before Senior Year
  • Plan for the GREs (when and where to take, studying)
  • Begin filling out the Organize It...Now chart
  • Visit nearby graduate schools for overview (plan carefully, some schools are not in session)
  • Start to answer questions on the Graduate Program Profile
  • Examine applications for several schools online and begin to narrow your choices
  • Print out "Statement of Purpose" guidelines for schools you are exploring
  • Explore outside funding opportunities
Senior Year, First Semester
  • Once you have all your syllabi, create a timetable for your semester requirements (exams, papers, finals)
  • Decide on the number of grad schools you will apply to
  • Check deadlines for grad school applications against your schedule
  • Sign-up for GREs
  • Solicit Recommendations
  • Draft Statement(s) of Purpose
  • By Thanksgiving complete:  Statement(s) of Purpose, have recommendations on file
  • Complete and mail applications
Senior Year, Second Semester
  • Visit and evaluate accepted schools
