Internships

General Information

Career Services has resources available to help you secure an internship during the summer or academic year. For help with your search, workshops and individual appointments are available. Call (617) 627-3299 for information and sign-up.

Credit for Internships

Whether or not an internship is paid or unpaid, with or without credit, it offers you a wonderful learning experience. If you or your supervisor are seeking credit, you should first determine if an academic department or program offers an internship course for academic credit. If there is no program or department on campus that will grant academic credit for your internship, you may apply for Career Services Internship Credit.

Academic Internship Credit

Some academic departments at Tufts offer credit for internships. Please speak with a representative in the appropriate academic department for more information.

Internships in the Communications industry typically require Academic Credit, therefore students must register for the Communications and Media Studies internship course, EXP0099C. This course is available for the following types of internships in the communications field:  public relations, marketing communications, advertising, newspaper, magazine, book publishing, television, radio, recording industry, photography, film/video, digital/multimedia, graphic design, web design, etc. For more info go to http://www.excollege.tufts.edu/CMS/internships.htm.

Career Services Internship Credit

In cases where internship credit is NOT available through an academic department or program, you may apply for Internship Credit through Career Services. Tufts Career Services Internship Credit will be a notation on your transcript upon completion of the internship.  Career Services Internship Credit will NOT count toward your graduation credits. You must apply for this recognition prior to the beginning of your internship; it will not be given retroactively. Please read the following before applying for Tufts Career Services Internship Credit:

  1. You must be a full time matriculated student at Tufts University. You may apply for Career Services Internship Credit for internships occurring after you have completed your first academic year of college and prior to graduation.  No limit is specified on the number of Internship Credits that a student may complete.
  2. Internship Credit is offered during the fall semester, spring semester, or over the summer.  Fall internships must be performed between September and December.  Spring internships must be performed between January and May.  Summer Internships must be performed between May and August.  A student is expected to spend a minimum of 100 hours at the internship site over the fall or spring semester, or 150 hours over the summer.
  3. You may NOT apply for Internship Credit through Career Services if an academic department or program offers academic credit through an internship course. Exceptions may be made if the department or program does not offer this academic credit opportunity during the semester of your internship or if you do not qualify for the academic credit.
  4. The Tufts Career Services Internship Credit is NOT academic credit. It does not affect your total number of credits needed for graduation. Since you do not receive a grade, it does not affect your grade point average. This internship option does not fulfill major, minor, or degree requirements.  No faculty sponsorship is required.
  5. You will not be awarded the Internship Credit until Career Services has received a completed registration form, a student evaluation, and an evaluation from your supervisor confirming that you have successfully completed the internship.  (Evaluation forms will be sent out mid-semester.)  The Internship Credit, an acknowledgement stating the place and time of the internship, will appear in the “notes” section of the student’s transcript.

To apply, please contact Janine Wilkinson in Career Services to determine your eligibility for Career Services Internship Credit.  (Unfortunately, Merrill Lynch will no longer accept Career Services Internship Credit for unpaid internships.)  After confirming your eligibility, please complete the Career Services Internship Credit Registration Form and return it with your supervisor’s signature and a description of your internship to Tufts Career Services in Dowling Hall, Suite 740 prior to the beginning of your internship and the following deadlines:

Fall Deadline:  October 1

Spring Deadline:  February 1

Summer Deadline:  July 1

NOTE: Upon request, Career Services will send your internship supervisor a letter stating your enrollment in the Career Services Internship Credit program and outlining insurance and liability coverage throughout the program.
