Choosing a Major

Major choice does not dictate career choice.  Unless you are planning to enter a technical field, such as engineering or accounting, you can obtain the skills necessary to succeed through any of the majors offered at Tufts.

• Assess your interests. Which classes have you enjoyed so far?  You are more likely to excel at a major that you find interesting, instead of making a selection based solely on assumed career options. Learn the facts about the broad array of career choices open to graduates of ALL majors here at Tufts.

• Eliminate options. List subjects you know you don't want to major in at this point.

• Talk to people. Meet with faculty to learn more about departmental majors, and with students majoring in subjects of interest to you.   Speak to alumni in the Tufts Career Network about their career paths and choice of major.

• Develop transferable skills (e.g., communication, critical thinking, and organizational skills) that you can apply to a variety of careers. Gain skills through internships, winternships, volunteer activities, and extra-curricular activities.

• Attend a Choosing a Major Workshop offered through Career Services.
