Internship Spotlight: Boston Children’s Hospital

Current Tufts student Julia Worden shared the following about being a Clinical Research Intern at Boston Children’s Hospital

What did you do as an intern at this organization?
Clinical research- Mainly utilizing applications such as PowerChart and REDCap to perform data extractions via Excel. My main projects also included patient enrollment interviews as well as patient follow-up interviews in order to gather data for analysis.

How did you find this internship?
Through Tufts’ Community Health Department

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I enjoyed the wide range of tasks that I was asked to perform, as I was able to gain skills in a wide variety of areas and with several different applications. I also enjoyed the many outside learning opportunities that my internship provided.

What did you find challenging?
The most challenging aspect was adapting to a mostly remote internship, where I had to work on a new form of communication both with my research team and patients as well as overcome the other obstacles remote work may present.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
An important aspect towards making the most of a similar internship is really utilizing your outside resources. Get comfortable communicating with your supervisor and let them know that you have interest in outside opportunities, whether it be attending open lectures or shadowing a clinician. They want you to gain the most out of this experience too and can be a great asset!
