Internship Spotlight: Hospital for Special Surgery

Current Tufts student Joanne Lau the following about being a Summer Intern at Hospital for Special Surgery

What did you do as an intern at this organization?
I was responsible for evaluating the impact of HSS’s community education and outreach programs, namely by creating/sending out surveys and conducting/coding qualitative interviews. Additionally, I created interactive Tableau dashboards to help different departments gain data insights regarding business processes and efficiency.

How did you find this internship?
I found this internship on Handshake!

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I liked that my role was cross-functional in nature – it gave me the opportunity to interact with many people outside of my own department and to develop different skills.

What did you find challenging?
It was a bit tricky to balance several deadlines – especially the long term ones – but quick check-ins with my supervisor regarding these “less urgent” tasks were helpful in keeping me accountable for making steady progress.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
Don’t be afraid to reach out to your supervisors or colleagues if you have questions. It’s better to over-communicate than to be unsure about something. Also, take advantage of networking opportunities!
