Tufts University Employer Newsletter – March 2022

Dear Employer Partners,

Happy Women’s History Month from the Tufts Employer Relations team!

We hope you are staying healthy and warm. We are eager to see the first signs of Spring in the coming weeks! As a reminder, Tufts students will be on Spring Recess March 19th-28th.

As always, if you have upcoming job or internship opportunities to recruit for at Tufts this spring, please reach out to the Employer Relations team member associated with your industry sector. We would be happy to connect with you about your recruiting needs.

Sincerely,

Employer Relations Team

☕ Employer Coffee Hour – Friday, March 18th, 1:00pm-2:00pm via Zoom

We would like to invite you to the Spring Semester’s Employer Coffee Hour. Our guest this month will be Andrew Shiotani, Director of Tufts International Center. Andrew has been advising international students and scholars since 1998 and worked at various institutions – including Columbia University, New York University, Seattle University, and the University of Oregon – before coming to Tufts. We hope to have an open conversation around the following topics:

  1. Hiring international students and ways to approach that process by speaking about OPT, CPT, H-1B sponsorship. (View the Envoy Employer’s Guide to H-1B Cap Season)
  2. International candidate experience in the workplace – a conversation on supporting new hires from outside the U.S. and their cultural journey in the U.S. workplace.

As always, we look for everyone to bring their organizations’ highlighted programs and practices to share. Please sign-up at the link below. We will be sending a Zoom invite to all interested employers prior to the event.

🎨 Calling all Arts, Communication, and Media Employers

We are looking for Arts, Communications, and Media employers to participate in our interactive Networking Night, which will be held virtually via Zoom on Thursday, March 31, 2022, from 7:00pm-8:15pm. Each employer will be assigned to a Zoom room, and students will be able to rotate between rooms every 15 minutes, having the opportunity to speak with up to 5 employers in the evening. If you are interested, please RSVP using this link. We hope you’ll consider joining us to help Tufts students learn about careers in arts, communications, and media. Thank you!

👩 Women’s History Month Resources for Employers

Women’s History Month is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture, and society and has been celebrated in the United States during the month of March since 1987. In observance of the month, the Tufts Employer Relations team wanted to share some resources on ways to incorporate the month into office environments and provide additional information on gender equality in the workplace, as well as other resources.

🐘 Assessing Virtual vs. In-Person Recruitment Preferences

As we think about shifting work norms and plan for future recruiting events at Tufts, we want to hear from you. Much of our current programming remains remote, including our twice-yearly Career Fairs. Does the virtual format of our career fairs suit you and your company’s needs, or would you prefer to return to in-person events? We would appreciate hearing your thoughts by completing this quick poll – this will take less than 5 minutes to complete.

💻 The Changing Map of Gen Z Jobseekers

Handshake reporting found that “Gen Z’s continued interest in remote and hybrid work will have a real economic impact, and employers will have to carefully assess their degree of flexibility in order to attract early talent. Flexible work is no longer a temporary compromise—it’s  a  new reality.” Download and read “The changing map of Gen Z job seekers” to learn more.

Key takeaways

  • Gen Z wants remote work: in 2021, remote jobs were almost 3x more popular than non-remote jobs among Handshake users.
  • Cities with the most remote jobs are more popular: the proportion of remote full-time jobs in a city was a statistically significant predictor of its popularity in 2021, with every 5% increase in remote jobs translating to an increase of one application per job.
  • But Gen Z is not indifferent to geography: multiple factors play into their career decisions, including a desire for flexibility and a reasonable cost of living.
  • Not just tech majors: 22% of all applications from communications majors, 20% from art and design majors, and 22% from health professions majors were to remote roles (compared to 25% from computer science and information systems majors).
  • Two case studies: Miami and Washington D.C. highlight how differences in affordability, remote work opportunities, and industry hubs play into applicants’ job decisions.
