Internship Spotlight: Middlesex District Attorney’s Office

Current Tufts student Noah Jaeger Bruehl the following about being a Summer Intern at Middlesex District Attorney’s Office

What did you do as an intern at this organization?
As an intern, I assisted Assistant District Attorneys with their day-to-day tasks. This included formalizing requests to various courts around the country, taking notes on certain matters, and writing up documents to be sent into court. All of the tasks I did would have been done by the ADAs themselves. I also attended about two trainings per week to learn about the office, law, and the criminal justice system.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
This internship was a great experience for me, allowing me to look inside not only the life within an office but inside a District Attorney’s office. Middlesex County, MA is the 22nd most populous county in the United States and oversees 54 cities and towns. The scope of the office was felt as an intern and made work even more important. I enjoyed listening to people who knew more than me. Every ADA I talked to was incredibly smart and detail-oriented; however, they all were personable and talked to my fellow interns and me as equals.

What did you find challenging?
The most challenging part of my internship was keeping track of a lot of documents and formal requests to be sent to courts. Nonetheless, it became manageable once a rhythm set in and eventually was just another thing to do.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
I would really try to get to know your supervisor. They are your best resource and that goes beyond just talking with them. It says a lot when they send you an email at 8:45am and you respond at 8:47, even though the work day starts at 9. Those little things are very noticeable and will help you make the most out of it, since people will start to rely more and more on you.
