How to Find Nonprofits

Finding nonprofit organizations that does work you care about is easier than you think. Perhaps you are looking for a meaningful internship for fulltime job, at an organization that is addressing a specific issue area, or, just want to discover what nonprofits exist in the city your hometown, the Boston area, or your future city.

Idealist is a job, internship, and volunteer search platform, exclusively for nonprofits. Not only can you search for opportunities, but you can also search for, and identify, organizations that are doing work you’re interested. This is a great way to learn about the landscape of any particular issue, and do research into what possible organizations you might want to work at in the future.

Here’s how:

  1. Go to www.idealist.org
  2. Search for Organizations, and select the location in which you’d like to search
  3. Narrow down your search using a keyword OR Issue Area
  4. Browse the many nonprofits that align with your search. You can select any of the organizations to view their profile, and even visit their website

If you discover an organization that excites you, look for volunteer opportunities, internships, or jobs on their website. Search LinkedIn and the Herd to see if any Tufts Alumni have worked there, and reach out to learn more about the organization and ways you could possibility get involved. You never know where reaching out to learn will lead you, so why not? You might just learn something
