Internship Spotlight: Markit Social

Current Tufts student Matthew Amuguni shared the following about being a Summer Intern at Markit Social

What did you do as an intern at this organization?
I worked as a Software Engineer and Quality Assurance intern during my term at the company.

How did you find this internship?
I found this internship by talking to my roommate who ended up hearing about the opportunity.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I enjoyed the overall flexibility of the internship and the job. My supervisor Jonathan was very accommodating towards any issues that came up at various times in the internship. If I needed to work virtually, due to other appointments or any other issues, Jonathan always made sure that I could. Not only that but he was always available to answer questions or do anything that I needed from him. The biggest thing that I loved about the internship though was how self-driven it was in terms of workload and problem solving. I felt like I was able to thrive and learn so much from the experience without needing to have my hand held through every single task. At the same time I was encouraged to ask questions and never really felt like I was being belittled.

What did you find challenging?
While the self-driven portion of the internship was definitely very fun it was definitely stressful as well. Working at a startup, there were basically no senior engineers who worked in the industry for substantial time beforehand. While there were definitely skilled engineers around me, we were all pretty young. This meant that many times when it came to problem solving we had to reinvent the wheel. Had there been older or more experienced members of the team, this could have not been in an issue but that is part of the growing pains of working at a startup. Problem solving was definitely fun, but sometimes it could be tedious.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
Do not be afraid to ask questions, please! When you start working at a company at a young age, you’re constantly learning and so you should never feel like you’re inhibiting someone else by asking.
