Internship Spotlight: The Anchan Lab at Brigham and Women’s Hospital

Current student Ameya Menta shared the following about being an Intern at the Anchan Lab at Brigham and Women’s Hospital …

What did you do as an intern at this organization?
As an intern at the Anchan Lab at Brigham and Women’s Hospital I was responsible for conducting my own experiments, presenting my findings at weekly laboratory meetings, and staying up to date on recent journal articles published in the field of women’s health and presenting the findings to the entire lab. I also had the opportunity to shadow various clinicians as well as watch and collect specimens from surgeries in the OR. I am so grateful to this internship for teaching me how to effectively communicate my scientific findings and continue to persevere through failure.

How did you find this internship?
I found this internship through a friend who had heard of people who had worked there and I cold called my supervisor!

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I really enjoyed how self directed this internship was, while still having tons of support from my supervisors and PI. Our community of interns and research assistants were incredibly tight knit and it made everyday an entertaining workplace. The collaborative environment made it incredibly easy to grow and be passionate about the work.

What did you find challenging?
I found it challenging to manage burnout/tiredness in a research setting due to the highly unpredictable nature of experiments where you can end up spending a lot more time than you had originally planned in the lab. It was important to learn to take a step back and try different things or even just take a mental break to get some clarity.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
I would advise someone to take advantage of every opportunity that is presented to you and don’t be afraid to reach out to anyone in the department. You would be surprised how many things open up to you when you start taking advantage of the connections you could be making!
