Tufts University Employer Newsletter – May 2023

Dear Employer Partners,

Happy spring! Please join us in congratulating our Class of ’23 graduates who wrapped up their Tufts experience this month. Amina J. Mohammed, deputy secretary-general of the United Nations and chair of the United Nations Sustainable Development Group, delivered the commencement address on May 21st.

As the semester comes to a close, the Employer Relations team is already beginning to make plans for the Fall term, including our virtual and in-person career fairs. Additionally, if your company is interested in hosting any On Campus Interviews (OCIs) this fall, either in-person or virtually, we welcome you to sign up for a date on Handshake starting July 5th.

Sincerely,

Employer Relations Team

🍁 Fall Virtual Career Fair

This fall we will be hosting a virtual career fair followed by an in-person career fair (keep scrolling for in-person fair details!) Similar to this spring, we will be utilizing Handshake for our Fall 2023 Virtual Career Fair. Employers can host 30-minute group sessions throughout the fair and conduct 10-minute 1-on-1 video conversations with students.

Registration Fees for Fall 2023 Virtual Career Fair:

EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT of $50.00 for those who register for either our in-person or virtual career fairs by August 1st, 2023.

Virtual Career Fair Format

  • We are expecting 200+ employers to attend our upcoming virtual career fair, so we request that you register as soon as possible to confirm your spot
  • We also recommend that employers plan to have at least 2-5 representatives attend the fair to be able to host 30-minute group sessions concurrent with 10-minute 1:1 individual chat sessions with students.
  • We encourage attending employers to host at least one group session as it is the most efficient way to reach several unique students. Each group session can have a different descriptive title if you want to engage in a variety of topics, such as general info sessions, Ask Me Anything panels, a session around a particular role you are hiring for, etc.
  • Employers should update their Handshake profiles with new jobs and internships well in advance of the fair date. In addition, please highlight any Tufts alumni representatives by listing their name, class year, and major in your employer description for the fair.
  • Employers need to build out their schedules in advance of student registration opening. Students can only sign up for group sessions or one-on-one sessions after these are finalized and made visible in Handshake.
  • Students have the opportunity to attend a Tufts Virtual Career Fair preparation session to learn more about how to navigate a virtual career fair. Students will be required to schedule all one-on-one chat sessions and group sessions in advance of the fair. We are not responsible for students that attend the virtual event and are unable to access sessions or chats on the day of the event.
  • For more information about navigating Handshake’s Virtual Fair, view their Virtual Career Fair Quick Start Guide.

☕ Employer Coffee Hour Labor Market Survey

Last week we hosted a fruitful coffee hour on the subject of the labor market and how it has impacted employer recruitment plans and strategies. There were 36 employer partners in attendance and we received 16 responses from organizations from our employer survey. Survey results can be found below:

  • The following industries were represented in responses: Healthcare Data Analytics, Pharma/Biotech, Venture Capital, Mental/Behavioral Health, Healthcare Consultancy, Consulting (Strategy), Coaching, Information Services, City Government Energy Management, Manufacturing Software Start Up, Community Service, Software, Government, Technology/Additive Manufacturing, Tech Recruiting, Economic Consulting
  • The majority of responses indicated that the current labor market has impacted recruitment goals in some way
  • Respondents who did not see a shift in recruitment goals were from the following industries: Healthcare Consultancy, Coaching, Software Technology, Additive Manufacturing, Economic Consulting
  • Recruitment goals were reported to be impacted in the following ways: decrease in recruitment of early talent and interns, i.e. scaling back, difficulty recruiting more senior positions due to salary demands/no remote options, difficulty finding qualified talent
  • Additional recruitment challenges that were shared: remote vs. onsite work, candidates reaching the interview/offer stage with multiple companies at the same time, campus budgets decreased, intern hiring reduced, and some teams had to rescind offers.

We are still collecting data for this employer survey — please respond here.
