The Community Service Federal Work Study is a program for college students with demonstrated financial need who are serving the local community in Medford, Somerville, or Boston through work at local non-profits. Federal Work Study students work part time and use their earnings for tuition, books or living expenses.
A federal work study student will cost an organization 25% of the student’s wages, plus 7.65% of that 25% in FICA taxes, then the federal government pays the rest. If you have a budget to cover a federal work study student, you can create an account and post your job on Handshake.
Most students’ work study awards range from $2200-$2800 for the year. The hourly rate you pay will determine how many hours the student can work with you. A student cannot be paid for work after they exhaust the amount you have prepaid in work study wages or the work study award.
If you are interested in joining the program and to ensure that your organization meets the requirements for the Community Service Federal Work Study Program, view the program requirements on this website.
Please contact student.employment@tufts.edu to discuss any questions you have about the program and to complete the necessary program paperwork. Please note that your organization will have to contribute the full 25% + 7.65% in advance of the student’s hiring.
