William Huang, ’12, Program Officer, Citi Foundation
1. In just a few sentences, please tell us about your current job/graduate program/vocational endeavor.
I’m a Program Officer at the Citi Foundation, whose mission is to promote economic progress and improve the lives of people in low-income communities around the world. I have worked at a number of nonprofit and philanthropic organizations and believe in the catalytic power of the social sector.
2. How did your time at Tufts influence your career journey?
Tufts played a large role in influencing my decision to work in the social sector. In my sophomore year, I took a class taught by Professor Jean Wu titled “Race in America” that led me to understand how racism is systemic in nature. After taking that class, I knew I wanted to devote my life to addressing racial and economic disparities.
3. What advice would you offer to a student who wants to pursue a career path like yours?
Be curious! I had a myriad of interests when I was an undergrad and indulged in them– I took a mishmash of classes with titles like “The American 60’s” and “Understanding the Stock Market.” The world is a very complex and messy place, and if you go down academic rabbit holes, you might realize how seemingly unconnected and disparate disciplines can mesh into a whole that is greater than the sum of the individual parts.
