A major teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, BWH has a legacy of excellence that continues to grow year after year. Brigham and Women’s Health Care – the parent corporation for Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital and the Brigham and Women’s Physician Organization – includes 150 outpatient practices with over 1,200 physicians. We serve patients from New England, throughout the United States, and from 120 countries around the world.
What does a typical day look like for an entry-level position in the department of neurosurgery?
For our practice operations assistant position, this employee directly supports one of our neurosurgeon’s practices administratively. This position coordinates the clinical patient appointments, operation room schedule, administrative calendar, travel, financial reimbursements and more. This position spends much time communicating with patients over the phone and in our clinic. This is a well rounded position for a employee to learn the ins and outs of a clinical practice and it is a great entry-level position into healthcare.
What can new hires expect during their first 90 days?
New hires can except extensive training to ramp up into learning their surgeon’s clinical practice. They will be trained on administrative tasks, have hospital-run EPIC trainings to learn the hospital computer system, and have job-specific trainings such as booking OR cases, insurance needs, timekeeping and more.
What is one benefit or perk a student could look forward to if they worked at BWH?
The neurosurgery department at BWH provides many perks for our employees such as small after-work event, large department-wide events, and breakfasts and lunches for staff monthly. This leads to a fun department culture and strong bonds between colleagues.
