Current SMFA student Talia Velez (BFA ’25) shared the following about being an intern at Broad Institute…

What did you do as an intern at this organization?
I took on a wide range of projects during my internship as the Broad’s Fall design intern! These included creating digital assets such as logos/wordmarks for Broad affinity groups, designing artwork and infographics for internal and external news stories, and designing print materials like signage for the 20th Annual Scientific Retreat.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I really enjoyed working as a part of a team! The design team was quite small, so I was able to build good connections with those on the team. The community aspect of being at the Broad was overall very supportive of my creative process..
What did you find challenging?
Initially, I was hesitant to step into a space that was outside of my specialization and so distant from my previous design experiences. I was worried that not having a background in STEM might hinder my performance at an institute that specializes in biomedical and genomic research. Everyone on the team, however, was happy to share their knowledge and passion for the science happening at the Broad, which made it a great environment for learning and collaboration.
What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
Just go for it! I almost didn’t apply for this position because I thought my lack of experience in STEM would make me unqualified. Although I did occasionally find myself confused by certain concepts and jargon, the team was there to keep me up to speed. Stepping outside of my usual realm of work opened up even more doors for future opportunities!
