Happy Black History Month

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event was the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.
At Tufts, the Africana Center is one of eight identity-based centers within the Division of Student Diversity and Inclusion and has been at Tufts for more than 50 years. The Africana Center provides access to academic and social resources and a wide range of activities for students of African descent. The Center celebrates Black history with programming during Black Legacy Month. Learn more about our Africana Center and our 8 identity-based centers.
NESCAC at Tufts

At Tufts, we offer our employer partners multiple ways to connect with students. One of those ways is through NESCAC Virtual Information Sessions. Tufts is a member of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC), and that means in addition to Tufts sports teams playing other NESCAC teams, the Tufts Career Center partners with Career Centers at the 10 other NESCAC schools to host employer events. As a result, employers are able to reach Tufts students as well as students from 10 other NESCAC schools. Hosting a NESCAC event can be a great addition to other Tufts-specific events.
If possible, we recommend employers include NESCAC alumni to lead these events to further develop relationships with the NESCAC schools. Students greatly appreciate alumni engagement, and having representatives with a similar academic background resonates with students.
If you’d like to learn more about hosting NESCAC sessions, please contact Sue Atkins at susan.atkins@tufts.edu.
Local Nonprofits Invited to Apply for Tufts Community Grants
Tufts University is now accepting Tufts Community Grants (TCG) applications from local nonprofit organizations located in its four host communities of Boston, Grafton, Medford, and Somerville. Generous donations this fiscal year from Tufts faculty and staff to the Tufts Community Grants program, combined with a Cummings Foundation matching gift, will allow the TCG board to award $105,000 this cycle. One hundred percent of donations made to TCG during the Tufts Community Appeal go directly to nonprofits as grants.

Grant applications will be accepted from February 1 through February 28, 2025. To be eligible to receive a grant, an organization must be a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, based in one of Tufts University’s host communities, and have had a Tufts student, faculty, or staff volunteer in the last year.
