Campus to Career: Tips for Summer Interns

First Day Feels: Tips to Settle In

Starting a new internship is a big step—and it’s okay if your first day feels a little awkward or overwhelming. Here are a few tips to help you get grounded and feel more confident:

  • Arrive (or log in) a few minutes early. Give yourself time to settle in and breathe—no rushing!
  • Bring curiosity. You’re not expected to know everything. Ask questions, take notes, and show you’re engaged.
  • Introduce yourself with intention. Prepare a short “about me” blurb to share with colleagues—it can make those first conversations smoother.
  • Write things down. Keep a notebook or digital doc with key names, tools, login info, and acronyms you come across.
  • Be kind to yourself. It’s normal to feel like a beginner—because you are one. You’re here to learn.

Remember: first impressions matter, but so does showing up consistently over time. You’ve got this!
