Internship Requirements by Academic Department

Several departments across Tufts offer internships as part of their degree programs for students. Each internship comes with varying requirements and expectations which we have outlined in the information in the chart below. If you are interested in learning more about a specific department, you can reach out directly to the contact person listed below.

In addition, if you are an employer with interest in offering your internship opportunity to Tufts students, please contact our Associate Director of Employer Relations, Sue Atkins, to discuss your existing program or about building your own internship program.

  • Required for degree?: Not required
  • Eligibility for students: Anthropology Majors/minors only
  • Internship specifications: Student may reach out to any faculty listed as ANTH 99 course instructors with a proposed internship and, if agreed upon, the department provides permission to register
  • Number of hours: 12-16 hrs/wk
  • Assessment: Reflective final project – can vary, ex. paper, lit review, presentation to org
  • Internship supervisor: Core Anthropology faculty may serve as supervisor (listed under ANTH 99 in SIS)

  • Required for degree?: Required
  • Eligibility for students: All undergrads (either an applied or research experience); the applied track of our master’s program; all doctoral students
  • Number of hours/Credit: For Undergrads: ~150 hours [3-4 SHUS of credit for majors). For Master’s: 225 hours (any season, can be all at once or spread out over longer stretches of time) For PhD: 600 hours (any season, can be all at once or spread out over longer stretches of time)
  • Assessment: For Undergraduates: nothing formal. For Master’s students: Students are assigned a departmental Faculty Internship Mentor and participate in a biweekly internship seminar. Includes written critical reflection assignments, professional development strategies, an internship presentation, and a culminating capstone paper. For PhD: One page statement summarizing internship, letter from internship supervisor.

  • Required for degree?: Required
  • Eligibility for students: Students are juniors or seniors that have completed foundation courses. They must take an internship course alongside the internship
  • Internship Requirements: The internship must take place in the Boston area and can be hybrid. They prefer on-site internships vs. remote
  • Number of hours/Credit: 150 hours over the course of Fall, Spring, or Summer (paid or unpaid). They can do more hours above 150. Internship is graded for credit.
  • Assessment: The employer and the student will complete a 4-week evaluation and a final evaluation with the student. For the required class, tehy will have assignments and a final class presentation about the internship experience
  • Internship supervisor: The supervisor must be able to meet with the intern for 1-1.5 hrs each week to provide guidance, mentorship, etc. They must be working in a public health related area, but does not require an MPH background specifically

  • Required for degree?: Required for BSE Environmental Health only
  • Eligibility for students: Internship is required for the BSE Environmental Health degree only. BSCE, BSEvE, and grad students optional. International students may do internship to allow them to use CPT
  • Number of hours/Credit: Depends on the employer. A 3-SHU requires 10-12 hours for BSE-EH students. A 1-SHU is usually used for other students and depends on the employer.
  • Assessment: BSE-EH must meet the faculty advisor weekly and have a final report and presentation
  • Internship supervisor: Advisor is typically someone familiar with the topic

  • Required for degree?: Not required
  • Eligibility for students: Undergraduate students are able to have an internship count towards their American Studies major through the course number, AMER 99
  • Number of hours/Credit: Minimum 12 hours per week. Option to receive just academic credit, or both credit and grade through internship course AMER 99.
  • Assessment: Must keep a journal and be in contact with a faculty advisor. The course can be taken as pass/fail. To receive a letter grade, must submit a 10-page paper.
  • Internship supervisor: The advisor should be a faculty member in the Department of Studies in Race, Colonialism, and the Diaspora

  • Required for degree?: Not required
  • Eligibility for students: Program is for undergrads only
  • Internship Requirements: Students typically source their own internship company sponsors. Sponsors need to be either a startup (a young company with a small team), a small non-profit, or a small entrepreneurial group within a larger organization (for profit, not for profit or government agency)
  • Number of hours/Credit: Minimum 120 hours. For school year internship, students receive 3 unit credits. For the summer internship, neither credits nor a grade.
  • Assessment: Students must submit a proposal that is codeveloped by entrepreneurial faculty coach. Students complete midpoint reflection and final reflection, and have weekly or biweekly checkins with their professor.
  • Internship supervisor: The company needs to identify a primary contact who will liaise with the students throughout the semester. The primary contact from the company must be in a leadership role and be committed to supporting the student in meeting their learning objectives, while leveraging the student’s role to support the company

  • Required for degree?: Not required
  • Eligibility for students: The student must be a major in economics, or a graduate student in economics
  • Number of hours/Credit: Receive academic credit, no major credit, grade is pass/fail or S/U, usually one credit
  • Assessment: Provide a 5-7 page written summary of the activities and how it relates to the economics discipline and to the courses they have taken in economics
  • Internship supervisor: Not required

  • Required for degree?: Required for undergraduate majors
  • Eligibility for students: Students must sign up for ENV 99 course
  • Internship Requirements: For the internship to count, it must be at least 100 hours and involve environmental work
  • Number of hours/Credit: Min 100 hrs. Students must sign up for a 0 SHU, P/F class (ENV 99)
  • Assessment: Evaluation form describing experience and poster presentation at internship symposium
  • Internship supervisor: No specific requirements

  • Required for degree?: Not required
  • Eligibility for students: Undergrads can participate provided they have completed their first year at Tufts; summer after a student’s first year is the first time they can do an internship for credit
  • Number of hours/Credit: Students can take a 2-credit (75 hrs) or 4-credit (150 hrs) pass/fail internship course. International students must do internship for credit, as per their visa requirements.
  • Assessment: For 4-credit internship course: write 3 papers and attend 3 meetings with department head. For 2-credit internship course: write 2 papers and have 2 meetings with department head
  • Internship supervisor: No specific requirements – they just have to be willing to be interviewed for student papers and meet with students to go over evaluations at the end.

  • Required for degree?: Not required
  • Eligibility for students: Student must complete the IR Internship Application to be registered in the internship course (INTR 99)
  • Internship Requirements: Must be applicable to the student’s Thematic Concentration
  • Number of hours/Credit: A minimum of 12 hours a week or 150 total hours. The IR Internship may serve only as an elective within the student’s Thematic Concentration and does not replace other requirements within their chosen thematic concentration
  • Assessment: Students are expected to demonstrate in a written project the learning that has taken place on the job by placing the work experience in an academic context

  • Internship Requirements: Internships must be offsite
  • Number of hours/Credit: 3-10 hours depending on the amount of SHUs they’re taking it for
  • Assessment: The student must submit a written internship proposal that is approved by the department prior to the semester in which the internship will be performed (no internships with course credit will be approved once the semester of the internship has started) Upon completion of the internship, a written report is submitted that will be evaluated by the faculty adviser and the outside institutional supervisor
  • Internship supervisor: Faculty mentor has supervisory control of any work that receives credit

  • Required for degree?: Not required
  • Eligibility for students: Must enroll in Political Science 99 course. Must have sophomore standing or consent of the instructor. Must have completed one foundation course and two other related political science courses (one of the related courses may be in progress during the internship semester)
  • Internship Requirements: Can be online, in-person, or hybrid
  • Number of hours/Credit: Approx. 10 hours per week during the fall or spring semester. Must be done concurrently with Political Science 99 course. Course is for credit during the school year but no credit during the summer.
  • Assessment: At the end of the semester, the professor of the PS 99 course will contact the internship supervisor to evaluate the students’ work and discuss a letter grade. Student will complete written assignments relating to field experience to coursework throughout the semester.

  • Required for degree?: Not required
  • Eligibility for students: Must be a declared major, have an internship advisor, and register for PSY 99. PhD candidates generally do not do internships as they are busy with research and other responsibilities
  • Number of hours/Credit: Can receive academic credit but not graded

  • Required for degree?: Not required
  • Eligibility for students: As an SMFA student in the BFA, MFA, or Dual Degree programs, you can complete an internship to receive studio credit
  • Internship Requirements: The internship must take place on site at the employer – a gallery, museum, non-profit, company offices. Students must secure their own internships
  • Number of hours/Credit: Students can receive studio credit. 100 hours completed = 2 credits, 200 hours completed = 4 credits, 300 hours = 6 credits (300 hours can only be completed during summer semester)
  • Assessment: Mid-program and final evaluation
  • Internship supervisor: Katie Sullivan oversees the Internship for Credit course

  • Required for degree?: Not required
  • Eligibility for students: Sociology only has undergraduate students
  • Number of hours/Credit: The number of credits earned is dependent on the amount of time and related academic work agreed upon.
  • Assessment: The students must prepare a written proposal and have it approved by the faculty member.

  • Required for degree?: Not required
  • Eligibility for students: Available for both majors and minors
  • Internship Requirements: Students choose an appropriate internship site based on their own interests and in consultation with the Director of the Program
  • Number of hours/Credit: Minimum of 12 hrs/week or 150 hrs/semester. One internship for credit can count as an elective for the WGSS major or minor. Faculty sponsor grades the internship with input from the site supervisor
  • Assessment: Typically requires a written component (details determined in consultation with director of program and/or faculty sponsor)
  • Internship supervisor: Students have a site supervisor as well as a faculty sponsor, with whom they meet during the course of their internship
