The way you say things matter, especially in the workplace. Try these helpful phrase “swaps” to improve your communication skills:

“This makes no sense” SWAP “Can you help me understand?”

“I’m sorry, but I disagree” SWAP “That’s an interesting perspective. Here’s how I was thinking about it.”

“I’m sorry I’m late in getting this to you” SWAP “Thank you for your patience”

“Sorry to bother you” SWAP “I have a question and I’m hoping you can help. Is now a good time?”

“This may be silly, but…” SWAP “Have you thought about…?”

“That’s not my job” SWAP “I’d love to help but I’m not sure I have capacity. Could we discuss how this could fit into my workload?”

“I haven’t had time SWAP I will get this done by…”
