Internship Spotlight: The Wigler Lab at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory

Current student, Grace Su, shared the following about being a Summer Intern at the The Wigler Lab at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory  …

What did you do as an intern at this organization?
As a scientific intern in the Wigler Lab at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, I conducted research under the supervision of Dr. Siran Li alongside his research technicians. I was able to observe and assist with experiments that test the methods Dr. Li is developing for single-cell analysis, which enable us to advance the understanding of complex physiology and disease, including cancer. I acquired valuable research skills, including DNA purification, gel electrophoresis with a bioanalyzer, centrifugation, and sample separations.

How did you find this internship?
I found this internship by cold emailing Dr. Li after finding him through the Cold Spring Harbor Faculty & Staff website.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I enjoyed working closely with Dr. Li to gain a comprehensive understanding of the methods previously developed for single-cell analysis, while also developing my wet-bench skills to contribute to the development of his new methods.

What did you find challenging?
I was concerned that, having not yet taken a biology class at Tufts, my understanding of the biology concepts might be limited. However, Dr. Li was eager to help me learn and understand by explaining the concepts or sending me relevant papers to read, which strengthened my background knowledge.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
My advice for any future intern is to take full advantage of being surrounded by passionate researchers. They are friendly, always available to explain concepts, clarify confusions, and discuss their research backgrounds and careers. They often offer valuable advice based on their personal experiences, which they are happy to share.
