Internship Spotlight: Middlesex District Attorney’s Office

Current student, Jenny Venant, shared the following about being a Summer Intern at the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office  …

What did you do as an intern at this organization?
Over the summer, I interned at the Middlesex DA’s Office under the Juvenile and Young Adult Diversion program. During my time there, I supported the development of individualized diversion plans by conducting research on community resources and educational opportunities. I was also able to observe court proceedings and intake meetings, gaining insight into juvenile justice procedures and alternative sentencing practices.

How did you find this internship?
I found this internship through the Tufts pre-law advisor, Rebecca Corke.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?
I enjoyed the ability to get a full scope of the criminal legal process. It was interesting to be able to read police reports, then sit in on pre-trial motions, trial proceedings, and so on.

What did you find challenging?
Honestly, the most challenging part of my internship was the commute. I had a two-hour drive there and back. But the connections I made during the time there definitely made up for it.

What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
I would advise people to never take any opportunities for granted and to also be their biggest advocate. If you want more work, ask for more work. If you want to sit in on a trial, ask if you can take an hour to watch. You get the most out of any experience when you advocate for what you want to see happen. The worst that can happen is to be told no.
