5 Tips to Prepare & Make the Most of Finance Networking Night:

1.) Prepare in advance by learning about career in finance

Here are a few helpful resources to learn about careers paths in the finance industry.  Wall Street Prep has a helpful one page infographic that gives a quick overview of careers in finance.  For more details, we recommend reading through the Forte Foundation’s Finance Industry Guide.

2.) Research employers prior to the networking night

Take a look at the list of employers attending the event.  Check out employer websites to learn about the individual firms, what services they offer, if they specialize in any particular industries, and specific information about internship and job opportunities.

3.) During the event, take notes during the employer panel

We will start out with an employer panel with alumni representatives from 4 different firms.  This will be your opportunity to learn about finance as a career field, what the alumni do day to day, how firms differ from each other, and what advice the alumni have for you as students interested in finance as a career path. Taking notes will help you brainstorm questions to ask in the open networking portion of the event.

4.) Prepare a few questions to ask employers during open networking

During the networking portion of the event, you’ll have the opportunity to ask questions of the employer representatives (many of whom will be Tufts alumni!).  Try to brainstorm some specific questions in advance.

Here are a few sample questions to get you started:

  • What does a typical workday look like for you?
  • What do you love about your job? What do you find challenging?
  • (For alumni) Were there any Tufts experiences that helped you prepare for what you do now?
  • What should a student in my position do if I’d like to pursue a path similar to yours?
  • What kinds of skills and experiences do employers in your line of work look for?
  • Do you have any favorite interview prep resources or strategies?

You may also have specific questions related to your own experience or major.

5.) Send thank you messages to company representatives

Some employer representatives will provide their contact information to students who have further questions after the event. If not, you likely will still be able to find their profiles on LinkedIn. You can send a professional “thank you” message to thank them for participating in the event and reference a specific anecdote or example from your conversation that you found particularly helpful. We have some general “thank you” messages for networking contacts on our website that you can edit to fit this occasion.
