Resource Spotlight: Copley Society of Art (Co|So)

Are you looking to grow your artistic practice, strengthen your professional portfolio, or connect with Boston’s creative community? This Resource Spotlight features an organization with deep historical ties to SMFA and a wealth of opportunities for emerging artists: The Copley Society of Art (Co|So).

Founded in 1879 by SMFA students, Co|So is the oldest nonprofit art association in the United States. Today, it continues its mission to support artists through community, exhibitions, and professional development—making it an excellent resource for SMFA students and alumni exploring careers in the arts.

Student Artist Memberships (Free for Full-Time Students)

Co|So offers free Student Artist Memberships for full-time undergraduate and graduate students. This membership provides access to many of the benefits enjoyed by professional artist members, including exhibition opportunities, critiques, and community events.

Students who apply also participate in a portfolio review with a Co|So artist—an invaluable chance to receive personalized feedback and strengthen your practice. Learn more and apply here.

Portfolio Review Program

Interested in feedback but not ready to apply for membership? Students can also request a standalone portfolio review. These 30-minute one-on-one sessions are a meaningful way to learn from established artists and prepare for future submissions, residencies, and exhibitions. Details at the link above.

Professional Development Workshops

For students and alumni, Co|So hosts ongoing workshops that focus on practical skills for working artists. Past sessions have covered topics like building a portfolio, social media strategy, career planning, and even conversations around AI and art. Workshops are typically one hour, held in the early evening, and open to the public. Explore upcoming offerings here.
