Current student, Siena Furfaro shared the following about being a Summer Intern at The Office of Massachusetts State Representative Adrian Madaro …

What did you do as an intern at this organization?
As an intern, I assisted the office with drafting and disseminating materials for constituents, attended legislative briefings, synthesized information to better assess current and proposed laws, represented the office at events in the district, and researched questions, concerns, and legislative issues for constituents.
How did you find this internship?
Growing up in East Boston, the work of Representative Madaro’s office was always prominent and well-known within the community, and after having an opportunity to hear the Representative speak about his role, I was inspired and emailed the office to offer support as a volunteer. In return, the office replied with the opportunity to intern under the legislative aid for the summer.
What did you enjoy most about your internship?
The most enjoyable part of my internship was getting to use my legislative research to help constituents solve issues within the community. Additionally, I enjoyed attending community meetings and getting to better understand prominent issues through interactions with constituents.
What did you find challenging?
Oftentimes, I struggled with imposter syndrome working in an environment with very experienced, hard-working, and passionate legislators, staffers, and interns. Nevertheless, ensuring that I put my best effort into every assignment and completing research that overall benefitted constituents and the community allowed me to move away from any doubt that I was feeling.
What advice would you offer to someone who wants to make the most of an internship like yours?
If someone was considering an internship in public service at the Massachusetts State House, I would advise them to have as many career conversations and make as many introductions with other interns and staffers as possible. Learning about the many different career paths and policy interests of everyone in the building can provide great insight on a career in public service, and it’s a great way to build connections and friendships with others working in the same career field.
