California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS) is seeking a talented, highly motivated attorney to serve as one of the highest-level advisors to and representative for the Receiver appointed to the United States District Court in the case of Plata v. Newsom regarding complex and sensitive legal matters.
Within this highly visible role and under the direction of the CCHCS Chief Counsel Office of Legal Affairs, you will:
• Provide guidance regarding sensitive and complex legal matters for the Health Care Compliance Support Section regarding utilization management issues.
• Manage assignments involving litigation before state and federal courts with a high degree of sensitivity and difficult regarding broad or specialized areas of law pertaining to the powers, functions, obligations, operations, and transactions of the federal court’s receivership.
• Provide legal advice and expertise on written responses to Plata “Paragraph 7” requests for information regarding complex inmate healthcare issues for the purpose of ensuring timely access to medical care for the patient population.
• Develop, review, and interpret legislation, rules and regulations that are necessary for the transformation of the prison medical system.
• Advise on matters regarding inmate healthcare appeals, assist in responding to inmates and their representatives’ correspondence regarding issues raised by the plaintiffs’ attorneys in Plata.
• Handle complex rulemaking actions affecting sensitive and high-profile aspects in the development of Title 15 regulations for CCHCS.
• Travel within the state as needed.
In addition to active membership in The California State Bar and a minimum six years of experience in the practice of law, desirable candidates will also possess:
• Knowledge of laws related to medical practice, provider, and facility licensing, medical staff policy, patient privacy, consent, public records, conflicts of interest, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
• Experience with corrections or the criminal justice system, medical-legal issues, and litigation
