The Office of State Senator Gustavo Rivera is seeking energetic, talented, passionate internship candidates who are looking to improve the welfare of New York State through the legislative and policy-making processes. Candidates with an interest or background in the following policy areas are particularly encouraged to apply: health, criminal justice, finance, education, public safety, civil rights, election reform, social services, transportation, environmental, or budgets. This is a perfect opportunity for students who are completing studies in public affairs, public policy, and urban planning to gain meaningful government experience.
This is a perfect opportunity for candidates who are looking to gain first-hand experience with the processes through which the New York State Legislature operates and who are passionate about improving the welfare of New York State through legislative and policy-making measures.
Specific responsibilities will include: conducting policy research; analyzing City and State policies and agency programs; developing and drafting policy recommendations; tracking and responding to agenda priorities; meeting regularly with advocacy organizations, government agencies and officials, and stakeholders on a variety of issues; watching or being present at legislative sessions and budget briefing, learning how to navigate the Legislative Retrieval System (LRS); and writing policy briefings and reports for the office. We also expect the Policy Intern in staff meetings so that they can gain an understanding of how their work with our Albany Office directly affects our district.
Qualifications: Excellent written and oral communications skills. Self-motivated, determined and able to work independently, as well as collaboratively. Excel in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Strong problem solving skills. Must have access to a computer and be able to check in via video chat once a week. The internship will be conducted in person at our Legislative Office at the New York State Capitol in Albany.
Start date: ASAP.
Hours: 10-20 hours per week (in person required, opportunity for remote work depending on schedule)

Compensation: Unpaid; will complete paperwork necessary for students to receive available college credit(s) or outside grants.
