IP law firm Harrity & Harrity is hosting a free patent program called the Harrity Academy as part of our ongoing diversity initiatives. The Harrity Academy is comprised of free, online courses taught by Harrity attorneys to introduce diverse engineers to the field of patent law; provide exclusive training, practice materials, and mentorship; and teach how to effectively and efficiently draft and prosecute high-quality patent applications. The goal of this program is to help increase the number of diverse candidates entering the patent field while enhancing the quality of their overall practice.
A requirement of the patent field is having a technical/engineering background, and there are many opportunities for a lucrative career in patent law without having to go to law school. For this reason, we want to spread the word to engineers and engineering students who are looking for an exciting career path. The next semester of the Harrity Academy begins with our four-week Patent Basics Course on 2/2/2021, which will teach participants about these career opportunities, what to expect in the field, and tips to succeed.
Our live virtual classes will be held each Tuesday from 7:00 – 9:00 pm ET throughout February on Zoom and include practice assignments, speakers, and one-on-one mentorship throughout the course duration. All participants who complete the Basics Course will also be eligible for our Patent Prosecution Course and Patent Drafting Course, during which they will be able to practice with real-life examples of patent work. More information regarding the Harrity Academy can be found here: https://harrityllp.com/diversity/the-harrity-academy/
The deadline to apply for our Patent Basics Course is 1/15/2021. The application can be completed online by clicking here: https://harrityllp.com/diversity/harrity-academy-patent-basics-course-application/
Diverse candidates are identified as female and/or considered a minority in the legal field, pursuant to the Vault and Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) Guidelines [African-American/Black, Hispanic/Latinx, Alaska Native/American Indian, Asian, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, Multiracial, Openly LGBTQ, U.S. Veteran, and/or Individual with Disabilities]
It is our hope that you can share this with your organization so members can apply if interested. Again, the program is entirely free- our goal in doing this is to begin to address the lack of diversity in the patent field and help diverse candidates find successful and fulfilling careers.
Thank you for your time- please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly if you have any questions.
