We are looking for a creative, energetic individual to support a pioneering effort at the intersection of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, racial justice, and art. This person will lead on finding and supporting artists who can help represent and bring to life people’s lived experiences in science, math, tech, and engineering learning in school from kindergarten through 12th grade.
100Kin10 is leading the charge of a co-owned effort called the “unCommission.” It is a massively diverse and participatory experience to identify a set of interlocking goals for the future of STEM learning and opportunity. The beating heart of the unCommission will be storytelling, seeking out and lifting up the stories and experiences of those excluded from STEM opportunities and especially Black, Latinx, and Native American communities, communities with all the passion and creativity needed to shape the STEM fields and spur our greatest innovations and inventions yet which are, because of racism and exclusion, furthest from the opportunities of STEM education and the STEM workforce. One element of the unCommission experience is art – bringing delight, inspiration, and connection to the process. Artists will take insights from stories and translate them into visual, audio, or other art, cultivating the conditions for shared understanding ‒ while also making the ideas easily accessible to and shareable with the broader public, raising up the voices, experiences, and gifts of our storytellers and their communities. Here is a link to our artist overview, which is still a work in progress.
We expect this role will be more intensive in the months of July and August, as you finalize materials and reach out to and recruit artists to join the effort, and then lighter in the fall and possibly into winter, as you support the artists to connect to the storytellers (we will be recruiting the storytellers) and share their stories in various media. This is a paid opportunity.
If this is exciting to you and sparks your creativity, we’d love to talk and hear your ideas for how this might work and the time you believe it will take to do well. Please be in touch with Teresa Mooney, teresa@100Kin10.org.
