NJ Advance Media (NJ.com) is looking for a versatile, curious, ambitious, competitive, digitally minded reporter to cover trending topics as part of our expanding Content Innovation team and specific mission to continue growing website audience. The reporter will be tasked with identifying and explaining subjects people are talking about each day — locally and nationally — while finding smart ways to write about those topics. The reporter will write multiple stories per day via a mix of reporting, aggregation, research and social media mining.
The ideal candidate will have an interest in news, politics, business, entertainment, current events, and popular culture — basically, everything people are seeking information for online. An ideal candidate will: spot a trending topic before it has taken off; break down a viral moment for readers; explain why something is important; and learn to attack a topic from multiple points of view in multiple posts.
News chops are essential, and the candidate should be well-versed in SEO best practices. Bonus points if you can teach us something about SEO we don’t already know.
This is a newsroom position on our Content team. Part of the daily role will be to track key metrics to ensure content is performing. The job will be during business hours, but there is scheduling and location flexibility.
You should apply if you have:
- A degree in journalism, English or communications, or a related field;
- Minimum 2 years of journalism experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing;
- A fluency in SEO, Google Trends and keywords;
- An absolute passion for informing readers with an ability to expand the reach of stories and grow online audience;
- The ability to work independently under deadline pressure and prioritize appropriately;
- A solid understanding of news writing, journalistic ethics and story structure;
- The poise and organization to handle multiple tasks at once at a fast-moving pace;
- A competitive nature and mindset
