The CCDC Army Research Laboratory’s Vehicle Technology Directorate (VTD) is the principal Army organization responsible for establishing knowledge and understanding to enable beyond next generation vehicle platform technologies to support the future warfighter. The goal at VTD is to shape the vision of the future battlefield imagined for 2035 and beyond, by achieving discovery and innovation in the areas of autonomous air and ground vehicles; next generation propulsion and power; and disruptive concepts for vertical lift and mobility. Establishment of new science and technology to enable the realization of structurally-adaptive, unmanned maneuver platforms – envisioned to integrate into manned-unmanned as well as unmanned-unmanned teams is a unique area of focus for VTD. This includes the realization of capabilities that will utilize intelligence to exploit and engage the operational environment for improved situational awareness; as well as internal state (IS) awareness for assessing capabilities and limitations of embodied intelligence with respect to mission objectives and diverse mission sets.

The VTD mission is accomplished through in-house basic and applied research, and from collaborations with other ARL functions, CCDC, Navy, Air Force, academia and industry leaders. The mission is enhanced through teaming with and leveraging of research efforts associated with Collaborative Technology Alliances (CTAs) and Multidisciplinary University Research Initiatives (MURIs). VTD is actively engaged with several industry and academic partners, has several active cooperative agreements, and a unique partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA.

Locations: Adelphi Laboratory Center (ALC), Maryland; Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG), Maryland; White Sands Missile Range (WSMR), New Mexico; ARL Regional Sites: ARL-West, California; ARL-South, Texas; ARL-Central Illinois; ARL North East, Massachusetts.

U.S. Citizenship is not required to be considered for as Summer Student Experience Fellow with VTD, but non-U.S. Citizens are strongly encouraged to apply early to allow additional processing time for the ORAU immigration office and ARL security.

About the Program
