The Human Research and Engineering Directorate (HRED) serves as the U.S. Army’s principal organization for conducting research in the Human Sciences, focusing on future technologies to enhance Soldier performance and Soldier-system interactions. The HRED develops and conducts a broad Science and Technology (S&T) basic and applied research portfolio, including the execution of basic and applied research in support of future Soldier technologies in several primary areas including: Real world Soldier quantification; integrated capability enhancement; synergistic human-machine interfaces; human and intelligent agent integration; cyber and network systems; Synthetic Biology Tools; Biomaterials Synthesis & Assembly; and Biology in Military Environments.
Programs and projects within the HRED S&T portfolio are aligned with the Army’s priorities and focus on high risk, high payoff efforts that will deliver next generation capabilities to the future Soldier, including support of the development and execution of the Army’s Maximizing Human Potential for Multi-domain Operations effort and the Army’s Priority Research Area of Synthetic Biology.
In the Humans in Complex Systems competency, research is conducted on human performance in complex environments, emphasizing innovative approaches to the design of novel real-world interactions between Soldiers and advanced technologies for effective human-agent teaming in dynamic, heterogeneous, multi-agent teams with physical and virtual agents. Approaches address critical issues including but not limited to: multi-modal, bi-directional interfaces, joint human-agent decision making, predictive models of human behavior, and multi-agent control and coordination in mutually adaptive systems.
In the Biology & Biotechnology Science competency, research is designed to provide the Army and ARL with methods and techniques of basic and applied research in support of technical areas including Synthetic Biology Tools, Biomaterials Synthesis & Assembly, and Biology in Military Environments.
Summer Student Experience opportunities exist across the HRED S&T portfolio, with a Soldier-centric focus across multiple scientific disciplines, including the biological, chemical, physical, psychological and social sciences, neuroscience and cognitive sciences, as well as relevant engineering disciplines and applied statistics and mathematics.

U.S. Citizenship is not required to be considered for as Summer Student Experience Fellow with HRED, but non-U.S. Citizens are strongly encouraged to apply early to allow additional processing time for the ORAU immigration office and ARL security.
DEVCOM Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Research Associateship Program (RAP) Summer Student Experience is an educational program that allows undergraduate through PhD students and recent Bachelor and Master’s degree graduates to participate in a paid research experience at a Department of Defense laboratory over the summer break.
A candidate must be in good standing (a minimum of a 2.5 GPA) at an accredited university or technical institute, and in an academic program leading to an undergraduate or graduate degree.
Scientists and engineers at ARL help shape and execute the Army’s program for meeting the challenge of developing technologies that will support Army forces in meeting future operational needs. Students can participant in research in one of the following areas:
- Computational and Information Sciences Directorate (CISD)
- Human Research and Engineering Directorate (HRED)
- Sensors and Electron Devices Directorate (SEDD)
- Weapons and Materials Research Directorate (WMRD)

- Statement of Interest – Write a one-page description of your scientific research experience. Please include references to your lab work as well as any relevant academic coursework. How does this experience intersect with your personal and professional goals?
- References – Reference forms are not required for the Summer Student Experience, but names and contact information for references are part of the online application. During the review process, some Advisor/Selecting Officials may contact references for further evaluation.
