The Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training (ADST) is a nonpartisan, nongovernmental organization dedicated to capturing, preserving, and sharing the experiences of America’s diplomats. We work closely with the U.S. Department of State and are located at the National Foreign Affairs Training Center (NFATC) in Arlington, Virginia.
Our internship program introduces students to diplomacy and diplomatic tradecraft through high-impact, hands-on experience. Interns contribute to projects that advance our mission by conducting research, supporting educational initiatives, engaging in congressional outreach, and applying emerging technologies to diplomatic training. Throughout the internship, interns gain a practical understanding of how diplomacy is practiced.
A defining feature of the internship is the opportunity to learn directly from experienced practitioners. Through our Diplomatic Leadership Academy and regular engagement with retired ambassadors, Foreign Service officers, and other foreign affairs professionals, interns gain firsthand insight into diplomatic tradecraft, leadership, and public service. Along the way, interns also develop the skills, judgment, and sense of purpose that will serve them throughout their careers.

Who Can Apply:
The ADST Internship is open to all majors, with preference given to students studying international affairs, political science, history, library science, journalism, business, and English. Students at all class levels, as well as graduate students, postgraduates, and recent graduates (within one year of graduation), are eligible to apply.
How To Apply:
We accept interns during the spring, summer, and fall semesters for both in-person and virtual experience. Special appointments during academic recesses may also be considered. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or U.S. Permanent Residents. Applications are evaluated upon submission.
If you are seriously interested in this internship, you should apply well before the deadline. Although the positions are unpaid, we do offer a modest stipend to help cover transportation costs.
