We are seeking a Laboratory Technician to support the overall functions of the Laboratory of Clinical Immunology and Microbiology (LCIM), Neuroimmunological Diseases Section (NDS). The NDS conducts investigations into the pathogenesis and treatment of neuroimmunological diseases, especially multiple sclerosis. The mission of the NDS is to diagnose, understand, prognosticate
and effectively treat neuroimmunological diseases at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Responsibilities
- Perform a wide variety of experimental procedures involving molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, and immunology techniques. Techniques involved will include molecular work, such as: DNA/RNA purification and quantitation, real-time PCR; cell culture work: isolation of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cells, cryopreservation of cells, growth of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS) and and their differentiation into cerebral organoids and cells of the nervous system and immune system, maintenance of cell lines and culture. Protein work includes ELISAs, SIMOA (single molecular analyte), western blotting, microscopy, flow cytometry analysis of patient’s blood and CSF cells, including intracellular proteins with/without cell stimulation. Training/opportunity to learn some of the afore-mentioned techniques will be provided.
- Maintain laboratory supply inventories including chemical and biological materials, consumables, and supplies required to safely handle biological materials, carcinogens, recombinant protein materials, acids, biological wastes. Order, receive, store and prepare reagents. Maintain security, record keeping, and monitoring of chemical and pharmacologic agents used in studies. Maintain inventories of cryopreserved samples and biospecimens. Maintain equipment service contracts.
- Maintain laboratory safety and update records of safety trainings.
- Analyze experimental data and supply results to task leader and discuss the interpretation, reliability and validity of ongoing research projects.
- Perform procedures to carry out the assignment under the direction of the task leader. In cases of new experimental designs, locate the appropriate references, and then set up, apply, and evaluate the procedure in question.
- Troubleshoot problems with equipment or experimental techniques and develop methods to resolve these difficulties under direction of the task leader.
- Collect and organize data and prepare technical reports; summaries, protocols, standard operating procedures and inventories.
- Operate and communicate effectively in a group, team-oriented working environment.
- Strictly adhere to SOPs, provide clear oral and written communication and adherence to details.
- Use databases for sample/reagent tracking.
Qualifications
- Work location: Bldg 10, RM 5N248
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Biology or a related field is required.
- 2 years of experience working in a laboratory setting.
