City of Salem – Traffic and Parking Department
The Traffic and Parking Department is responsible for a wide range of activities and duties, including managing the City’s parking supply, implementing the Bicycle Master Plan, and coordinating mobility services including bikeshare and rideshare. The Department staff’s the Traffic and Parking Commission and works under direction of the Mayor on pedestrian, bicycle, and general transportation planning and project implementation.
The Traffic and Parking Intern will work closely with department staff on numerous projects and initiatives related to a variety of subjects, including ongoing transportation/mobility efforts, cataloging the City’s on-street parking regulatory signage and comparing with the City’s Ordinances for accuracy, as well as analyzing parking utilization data and developing reports.
Intern candidates should display a general interest in urban planning, transportation policy, and data analysis. Skills that will enable an intern to be successful in this role include: Organization skills, graphic and web design, social media and general computer proficiency, strong research skills, ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with others, creativity and problem-solving skills, and strong writing ability. GIS skills not necessary but will be viewed favorably.
The Department is looking for someone to start sometime in May or June working up to 19 hours per week through the end of July. The intern’s schedule may be flexible within the City’s regular hours: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, and 8:00 a.m. to noon Friday. Opportunities to participate in public meetings outside these hours may arise.
*To comply the City’s COVID policy of limiting density within municipal buildings, the internship is anticipated to be conducted through a combination of remote and onsite work.
$15.00 per hour.
