Some of our Tax Examiners work on a flexible schedule in a hybrid work environment. Tax Examiners work remotely some days and in-person on other days. We also have positions with set schedules in the office, and some positions with scheduled days visiting businesses in assigned cities and towns.
As a Tax Examiner, you will inspire public confidence in government by administering and enforcing tax laws in ways that are innovative, customer-focused, and transparent to support Massachusetts citizens and the Commonwealth as a whole. Your duties will be determined based on the location of the vacancy and will be consistent with the duties of a Tax Examiner II within the respective Bureau.
Positions are in the following areas:
Audit: Audit personal and business tax returns; gather and review tax information to determine compliance; create assessments and secure returns/payments to ensure the fair administration of our state tax laws and explain state tax laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, usually by phone, virtual meetings, or correspondence, but sometimes in person.
Contact Center: Provide the highest level of professional customer service; represent the agency in direct public dealings; answer telephone inquiries; conduct virtual meetings, resolve written inquiries; make account transactions; review and adjust tax returns and provide technical assistance by explaining state tax laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Filing Enforcement: Identify, through street drives, the proper tax registrations and ensure the filing of returns/tax dues of businesses in the Commonwealth; visit businesses within assigned city/town; assist smaller businesses with fewer resources to engage professional tax advice; review operations and advise the taxpayer on any tax obligation that has not been fulfilled.
Collections: Ensure compliance with the enforcement of the applicable tax laws, rules, and regulations of the Commonwealth while fostering voluntary compliance; determine the correct amount of taxes due through review of departmental and taxpayer records and collect that amount from taxpayers on assigned accounts; answer telephone inquiries; provides technical assistance by explaining tax laws, rules, regulations, guidelines, and procedures; secure information and documentation from taxpayers and adjust taxpayer accounts, when necessary, based on information received, examine the returns, financial records and information of individuals, corporations, and other business establishments to determine the ability to pay tax liability and establish payment plans.
