General Overview:

Emvolon Inc. (emvolon.com) is an MIT climate-tech spin-off on a mission to convert greenhouse gas emissions into carbon-negative fuels and chemicals like green methanol and green ammonia. Leveraging our patented technology, we transform internal combustion engines into cost-effective, modular chemical plants. This breakthrough enables industries, including maritime, aviation, energy, waste management, and agriculture, to power the global economy with lower emissions.

At Emvolon, we are backed by leading venture capital funds and have secured grants from ARPA-E, the U.S. Department of Energy, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and the National Science Foundation.

Role Description:

We are looking for a highly motivated and hands-on co-op/intern to join our process engineering team. In this role, you will support the development of Emvolon’s novel gas-to-liquids process and play an integral role in the engineering design of our First-of-a-Kind (FOAK) commercial system for Green Methanol production. Additionally you will be involved in process modeling and experimental design, and occasionally also engage with our business development team to generate techno-economic assessments (TEA) for our technology proposition. This Co-op/Internship constitutes a unique opportunity to contribute to a groundbreaking technology, while gaining valuable experience and developing foundational chemical engineering skills.

The position is located in Woburn, MA.

Responsibilities:

Under the supervision and direction of more senior engineers you will:

  • Update and maintain process engineering documentation, including Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), heat and material balances, and equipment datasheets and specifications
  • Execute and validate process simulations using Aspen HYSYS to support equipment sizing, system optimization, and engineering decision-making
  • Perform engineering calculations to inform process design, and to define/validate equipment specifications
  • Design and/or execute experiments to validate process design and define key process operating parameters/conditions
  • Communicate progress on a frequent basis including recommendations for potential improvements
  • Assist with modeling and design of Emvolon’s small-scale gas-to-liquids process
  • Collaborate with the business development team to develop the techno-economic case for our technology

Experience and Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or Master’s engineering program in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related field.
  • Highly qualified candidates would have experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Sizing equipment and valve and specifying process instrumentation
    • Understanding of classification area requirements such as C1D2
    • Proficiency in process simulation (Aspen HYSYS preferred), heterogeneous catalysis and reactor design; hands-on experience working with catalytic reactors in laboratory or industrial environments a plus
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
    • Excellent communication and organizational skills.
    • Willingness to work in dynamic environments; start-up experience a plus

Benefit:

  • Hands-on experience in cutting-edge climate technology
  • Mentorship and professional development from experienced engineers and researchers
  • Potential for full-time opportunities after graduation

At Emvolon, we foster innovation, collaboration, and a growth mindset. We value diverse perspectives and believe in empowering our team members to make a real impact.

Emvolon is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age, veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
