Full-time Government, Law & International AffairsExpires March 2, 2021

For over 50 years, the Environmental Law Institute (ELI) has played a pivotal role in shaping the fields of environmental law, policy, and management both domestically and internationally.

ELI seeks an intern to support the Institute’s Development Office. The Development Intern will work directly with the Vice President for Development and Membership, Senior Manager for Foundations and Donor Relationships, and the Development & Membership Associate to help secure resources needed to meet future environmental challenges while gaining valuable work experience in non-profit management through professional mentorship. A significant focus will be the upcoming ELI Award Dinner, one of the premier environmental events held each year. This year’s event will take place Tuesday, October 19th, 2021, and the internship will continue through this time.

The Development Intern’s activities relating to the Award Dinner and other Development priorities including: assisting with donor outreach through emails, mailings, and phone calls; contacting U.S. Government Departments and officials about participation in ELI events; assisting with all aspects of donor recognition and record keeping such as donor database entry; and foundation and individual prospect research.

ELI integrates interns into the day-to-day operations of the Institute. It encourages intern attendance at ELI policy events, seminars, and meetings on various topics, including the renowned ELI Summer School introductory seminars designed to teach interns and law clerks about the legal foundations of environmental protection.

The position is 20 hours per week from May – August and would continue through October at 10 hours per week. Given the COVID-19 public health emergency and ELI’s commitment to prioritizing its employees’ health and wellness, this position will be teleworking only. Applicants located anywhere are encouraged to apply though we would require an adherence to Eastern time zone business hours.

Candidates should possess strong organizational, writing, research, time management, and interpersonal communication skills, as well as a strong attention to detail. Access to a computer and internet connection are required. Coursework, prior experience, or a strong interest in fundraising, public relations, marketing, communications, and/or events management are an asset, as well as a desire to learn about the nonprofit sector and the environmental field. Applicants must have completed their sophomore year of college. Compensation is not available, but ELI will support candidates in their efforts to secure external funding for the position.

How To Apply

Applications for the internship will be accepted until 11:59 pm EST Monday, March 1, 2021, and will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Interested candidates can apply online through ELI’s application portal, found by clicking the external application link on Handshake. Applications must include the following:

  • Cover letter (1 page maximum)
  • Resume (1 page maximum)

ELI is an equal opportunity employer firmly committed to achieving an inclusive, diverse workforce that values every individual. We firmly believe that hiring individuals with varying perspectives and backgrounds contributes to our success as an organization, and we strive to create an environment that fosters inclusiveness. As such, minority candidates and candidates from traditionally underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
