Equal Citizens is looking for a Director to incubate a new organization — DELIBERATIONS.US — that will facilitate structured deliberation on significant public policy questions, on a platform that enables unlimited small-group, virtual discussions.
Who Are We?
Equal Citizens is a national nonprofit founded to promote political equality through reforms to end gerrymandering, big money in politics, and voter suppression. Our strategies have included major litigation at the state and federal level, as well as other campaigns intended to try strategies that are different from those of other reform organizations. DELIBERATIONS.US is one of those different strategies.
Equal Citizens is an equal opportunity employer. We strongly encourage people of color, ethnic minorities, women, and individuals from the LBGT community to apply.
What is DELIBERATIONS.US?
DELIBERATIONS.US is a new project, and eventually, a separate organization, that will experiment with techniques meant to reduce negative partisanship, through sustained and direct deliberation. It will evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques and deploy them broadly where they can help. On a video discussion platform designed for small group deliberation — and many, simultaneously — participants are exposed to professionally developed videos presenting issues in a balanced and accessible manner; they then meet and talk with their fellow Americans, reviewing the facts and the best arguments from all sides, sharing their experiences, concerns, and values; and developing informed opinions — all in pursuit of common ground on common-sense reform.
The principal task of the Director will be to craft and execute a strategy to expand these deliberations on a mass scale, first engaging students in high schools, universities, and then eventually, voters more generally in communities nationwide. The goal is to maximize the quantity and quality of these deliberations and then to test their effect on participants.
The Director will oversee the day-to-day operations of DELIBERATIONS.US, including budgeting and fundraising in collaboration with the Equal Citizens leadership; communication with project stakeholders, funders, and partners, as well as academics studying the process and results; promotion via newsletters, websites, and social media; and virtual event planning.
Equal Citizens will incubate this project only. The Director will therefore also develop a strategy for the project to develop on its own, once its value is demonstrated, ideally within two years of launch.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter with entrepreneurial experience, a strong sense of accountability and personal initiative, and the ability to work independently with limited instruction. They should be comfortable collaborating with voters, experts, and officials from both political parties, as well as academics.
Training will be provided to the candidate in order for them to gain the specific skills needed to write surveys, manage the internal database, craft deliberations, and run virtual events.

- Prior experience with social entrepreneurship, nonprofit and campaign management, deliberative democracy, and civic engagement is encouraged and should be discussed in the cover letter.
