Overview
The Startup Innovation Lab (SIL) is an experimental, student-led initiative that explores one fundamental question:
How can universities and startups build stronger, more meaningful relationships that benefit both founders and students?
Unlike a traditional internship or placement program, the Startup Innovation Lab is exactly that—a lab. It is a space for discovery, experimentation, and co-creation. Students are not handed predefined projects or internship opportunities. Instead, they work together to understand the needs of startups, design new models of engagement, and build a thriving community that connects ambitious students with innovative companies.
The Lab recognizes that startups are one of the most dynamic parts of the U.S. economy. They create new technologies, challenge industries, and generate future employment. Yet many startups lack the time, networks, or resources to engage with universities, while students often struggle to access startup opportunities beyond their immediate circles.
The Startup Innovation Lab exists to bridge that gap—not by assuming the answer, but by discovering it together.

Our Philosophy
We do not begin with a fixed model.
We begin with curiosity.
Every semester, students investigate how startups recruit talent, collaborate with universities, build teams, and solve problems. Together, they identify barriers, test new ideas, and continuously refine the Lab’s approach.
The process is as important as the outcome.
The Startup Innovation Lab is built on the belief that the best solutions emerge through experimentation, feedback, and collaboration.
What Students Do
Students are not interns assigned to companies.
They are researchers, community builders, innovators, and connectors.
Working together, they will:
Map local and national startup ecosystems.
Identify founders and emerging companies.
Interview entrepreneurs to understand their challenges.
Explore how startups currently engage with universities.
Discover where students can create the greatest value.
Design and test new engagement models.
Build lasting relationships with startup communities.
Every cohort contributes to expanding the Lab’s knowledge, creating a living playbook that evolves over time.
Building the Startup Ecosystem
A core objective of the Lab is to create genuine relationships between students and founders.
Students will organize and participate in activities such as:
Startup Days
Visits to startup offices where founders share their journeys, demonstrate products, and discuss the realities of building a company.
Founder Meet-Ups
Informal gatherings that encourage conversation between entrepreneurs, students, mentors, and investors.
Innovation Walks
Exploring startup districts, incubators, accelerators, and co-working spaces to better understand local innovation ecosystems.
Startup Roundtables
Small discussions focused on topics such as hiring, AI, fundraising, product development, sustainability, and company culture.
Demo Nights
Events where startups showcase their products while students present research, ideas, and potential collaborations.
These activities allow relationships to develop naturally rather than through traditional recruitment processes.
Research Themes
Each semester, students investigate questions such as:
What prevents startups from engaging with universities?
What kinds of student support are most valuable?
How can students contribute before a company is ready to hire?
What skills do startups struggle to find?
How can AI improve startup recruitment and collaboration?
What makes startup internships successful?
How can universities become better partners for founders?
The answers become part of the Lab’s growing body of knowledge.

Rather than implementing one fixed program, the Lab continuously pilots new ideas.
