Hunger Free New York City – Bilingual Benefits Screener

*This is a temporary, full-time position. The projected end date is 6/30/21, with a chance of extending beyond that date. All work will be conducted from the employee’s home. However, once our home office, satellite office in the Bronx, or community-based host sites can safely re-open, some work at these sites may be required. The needed technology & equipment will be provided.

Hunger Free New York City (HFNYC), a division of Hunger Free America, strives to build a nonpartisan, grassroots movement to enact the policies and programs needed to end hunger in New York City and ensure that all New Yorkers have sufficient access to nutritious food.

A significant aspect of HFNYC’s work is to connect eligible residents to SNAP / food stamp benefits and to assist them during the application process. The receipt of SNAP for those eligible individuals and families contributes to improved nutrition and reduces the financial strain of trying to pay for other household expenses on a limited budget. During the current COVID-19 crisis, there has been a tremendous surge in the number of people applying for SNAP benefits and in need of other types of food assistance. We have received new funding to help meet this surge in demand.

Job Description:

The Benefits Screener will work remotely to provide SNAP eligibility screenings to New York City residents. The Screener may also connect clients with other nutrition programs such as Pandemic-EBT (for families with school-aged children), home meal delivery, and referrals to food pantries and soup kitchens. All work must be entered into a database to track client progress.

HFNYC is an equal opportunity employer. People of all races, sexual orientations, ages, faiths, economic and social backgrounds, genders, physical abilities, and national origins are strongly encouraged to apply.

Skills:

*ONLY BILINGUAL CANDIDATES will be considered for this position. (Ideally Spanish, Bengali, or Chinese – both Mandarin & Cantonese, though other languages will be considered)

Experience in anti-hunger/nutrition; benefits screening (esp. for SNAP); working in low-income communities. High-energy self-starter with strong communications, problem solving, organizing, and inter-personal skills, and a demonstrated commitment to fighting poverty and hunger.

Salary and Benefits

Salary is $20 / hour. Benefits are competitive with other similar positions in nonprofit organizations, including a very strong health insurance plan and paid time off.

To apply, please send a cover letter and resume to: jobs@hungerfreenyc.org

Be sure to include Temp Benefits Screener in the subject line. Applicants sending resumes without a cover letter will not be considered.
