1. Project Description:
a. Project Name: License Information Sources Index for Japan
b. Scope: Find the best databases and data sources for intellectual property (IP) licensing, with an emphasis on patent licensing information
c. Project Description: We need to start with basic information
i. A patent is a government granted monopoly – as the owner of the patent you can exclude others from using the innovation disclosed in your patent.
ii. How do people legally get the right to use your patent? Either they acquire your patent or they get a license to use it.
iii. A quick background: https://www.greyb.com/patent-licensing-101/#:~:text=What%20Is%20Patent%20Licensing%3F,amount%20of%20pre%2Ddecided%20royalties
iv. We want to build a library of patent license data
1. There are companies that build these libraries and sell the info:
a. https://www.royaltyrange.com/
b. https://www.ktmine.com/ — check out that they even tell you where they get their data from (mostly SEC and news sources)
d. Project Description: We want you to do two things:
i. Sellers: Create a list of companies that sell IP licensing information
1. Name
2. URL
3. Description
ii. Sources: Create an index of potential sources of licensing information
1. Name
2. Location
3. URL
4. Sponsor (who owns it or sponsors the source)
5. Description (include enough information so we can understand what is in the library and the size of the collection—how would we use the source – e.g., The SEC EDGAR library is huge, but has licensing data in it, we just need to find it)
6. Cost to access
7. Whatever else you think is important
This is a template report – part of your assignment is to create a great template – please think about this – a great template
