Our college interns will play a pivotal role in helping us achieve our vision.
The following is a comprehensive breakdown of the college intern’s role:
Steadfast Solutions provides a safe, engaging, and enriching environment where children can explore, learn, and build confidence throughout the summer. Hosted at the Juanita Sanders Computer Learning Center, the program combines academic enrichment, technology, STEM learning, creative activities, and mentorship to support the development of youth.
MAJOR FUNCTIONS
The College intern will be responsible for coordinating activities during and for the Afterschool Program. The main objective of the program is to improve student’s math, reading and writing skills; however, students are also assisted in other subject areas. The college intern will also serve as a mentor to the youth in our program. We consider their role as mentors invaluable. Most of our youth do not have parents or family members who are pursuing or have pursued higher education; our college intern may provide the needed spark to inspire them to want to aim for higher education.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Assist our staff in developing individual education plans for students and groups students
into collaborative learning teams.
2. Tutor kids with their homework and other school projects.
3. Facilitate creative programs that foster mindfulness, social emotional learning etc.
4. Interns are encouraged to draft their own ideas for creative classes that develop academic, teamwork, artistic and social skills in youth.
6. Mentor grades 1st – 12th in social and emotional development.
7. Accompany and supervise kids in outside activities including sports and playground games
8. Must Pass CORI/SORI screening.
Introducing the Applied Psychology & Community Research Internship
Designed for undergraduate and graduate students interested in psychology, child development, education, counseling, social work, and related behavioral sciences, this internship combines community engagement with applied psychological learning.
Unlike traditional psychology internships, this experience is observational and research-based. Interns do not conduct experiments, provide counseling, administer assessments, or collect research data directly from children. Instead, you’ll learn how psychological research can be applied ethically to strengthen youth programming and promote positive developmental outcomes.
Phase 1: Observation & Reflection
Your research begins by becoming a thoughtful observer. As you participate in daily programming, you’ll document objective observations while considering the many factors that influence child development.
Phase 2: Literature Review & Research Connection
After identifying an area of interest, you’ll explore what current psychological research says about the developmental patterns you’ve observed. This phase bridges classroom learning with real-world community experiences.
Phase 3: EvidenceBased Program Design

Phase 4: Final Presentation & Reflection
The internship concludes with a professional presentation where you’ll communicate your research findings and recommendations to Steadfast Solutions leadership. This experience helps strengthen your ability to present psychological concepts in a professional setting.
COMPENSATION
Although the position is unpaid, many assistants have found success in transferring the hours into college credits, or in completing volunteer/internship requirements related to a degree.
Some educational institutions require prior approval before the start of an internship for academic credit. It is the responsibility of the student to check with their institution to be sure they meet any requirements before they accept a position.
