Full-time Government, Law & International AffairsExpires March 31, 2021

Our Software Engineers are breaking new ground within the Air Force, changing the way the Department of Defense builds software. We build, measure, and learn; creating war-winning software iteratively. No longer are we building off of multi-year plans with stacks of requirements.

Engineers at Kessel Run balance user needs, organizational outcomes, and technical feasibility in order to build value quickly while still considering the big picture. Our teams are flat and balanced, with Developers, Designers, and Product Managers working in concert, empowered to build the software we know our warfighters need.

You MUST be a U.S. citizen to apply and must be eligible to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance (see eligibility requirements here).

Day In The Life

A typical day as a Kessel Run Software Engineer starts with your caffeinated or decaffeinated beverage of choice and a team stand-up to align on goals for the day. As a senior engineer you will use Test-Driven Development to implement user stories from the product’s backlog. You will maintain our core engineering values, helping spread context to more junior engineers.

You will help Product Managers write stories by providing input on technical complexity and feasibility. You will be empowered to learn continuously, and guide others to learn continuously. You will work closely with your PM and Designer in a balanced team to define product direction. You will ensure code quality stays high, and give productive guidance when it falters. You will lead architecture decisions, and help other engineers understand the “why” behind them.

Who You Are

  • You have experience with Enterprise Identity Management Solutions (e.g., Okta) and/ or familiarity with AD, SSO, SAML, etc.
  • You have experience in working with Kubernetes / Docker/ Helm and have deployed applications in containerized environments
  • You have experience in Python
  • You have cloud infrastructure experience / IaC (Terraform)
  • You are familiar with the Spring and React.js frameworks
  • You enjoy mentoring and working on a balanced team
  • You have extensive experience with TDD, continuous delivery, and automated testing
  • You keep up with best practices and spread that knowledge to others
  • You are experienced with SQL databases
  • You can develop empathy with your users
  • You can facilitate conversations between engineers and non-technical staff
  • You have or can obtain SYO-501 CompTIA Sec+ certification.
  • You are a U.S. citizen and are eligible to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance (see eligibility requirements here)

We hire at the GS-13/14 level equivalent. This means you can expect a salary of $101,585 to $148,000 (depending on experience) for a Boston-based position (pay will be adjusted by location), as well as paid time off, health, and retirement benefits. There are advancement opportunities to promote to senior levels after hiring.

We understand that there is no such thing as the perfect candidate for any job and we believe in empowering people to learn and grow throughout their careers. We encourage any applicant who is interested in making an impact in the Department of Defense to apply to this position regardless of background and qualifications.
