GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The Medical Practice Evaluation Center (MPEC) is seeking an intellectually curious and highly organized individual to serve as the Program/Project Manager of the Center’s growing Biometry Unit. The position is with an internationally recognized multidisciplinary team from Massachusetts General Hospital dedicated to improving clinical outcomes, increasing value in health policy, and informing global public health through innovative research, collaboration, and education. The MPEC use methods of clinical epidemiology, economics, and computer simulation modeling to evaluate clinical outcomes, costs, and cost-effectiveness of strategies for preventing, managing, and treating HIV/AIDS, TB, COVID-19, and other diseases, both infectious and non-communicable.

The Program/Project Manager for the MPEC Biometry Unit will play a key role in research program administration through coordination of data analysis activities and oversight of Biometry Unit personnel allocations, in addition to potentially contributing to projects as a researcher, if interested. In collaboration with the Directory of Biometry, the Program/Project Manager will lead continuous process improvements to maximize efficiency, transparency, and communication among Investigators and the Biometry Unit. Potential candidates should enjoy working in a complex and highly technical environment where innovation, planning, and communication is key to their success. Project management experience in building scalable initiatives, defining roadmaps and translating strategic initiatives into tactical, objective projects is crucial for this role.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following activities:

Program Management

Work with programmatic leadership to manage the MPEC research portfolio by orchestrating competing priorities, deadlines, and workload in a group with numerous ongoing research projects

Coach and develop Data Analysts, including:

  • Provide oversight and direction regarding projects’ progress and prioritization, meeting with each team member weekly
  • Facilitate career development opportunities
  • Participate in annual performance review process
  • Work with recruiting team to recruit new personnel
  • Develop and implement supervision guidelines of Data Analysts
  • Work closely with the Director of Biometry and Data Analysts to synergize and align program efforts, develop program metrics, evaluation plans, and document outcomes for reporting
  • In collaboration with the Director of Biometry, meet regularly with faculty (internal and external to the Biometry Unit) to discuss their projects and priorities as well as providing feedback regarding competing priorities and management approaches
  • Meet regularly with programmatic leadership to discuss strategic planning and opportunities to enhance operations
  • Ensure research integrity, including data documentation and data management, by developing best practices, provide ongoing training, and monitoring for adherence
  • Monitor personnel resource allocations and advise MPEC leadership on factors affecting research productivity

Project Management

  • Lead the coordination of activity within the Biometry Unit, ensuring on-time delivery of work products
  • Support successful project management of numerous projects across the MPEC by:
  • Develop clear, actionable plans
  • Coordinate completion of action items
  • Summarize project scope and deliverables
  • Develop and maintain project documentation
  • Set and communicate deadlines
  • Track milestones
  • Maintain collaborative team relationships with peers and colleagues in order to effectively contribute to the group’s achievement of goals, and to help foster a positive work environment by:
  • Use problem solving and relationship management skills to move initiatives forward and meet deadlines
  • Develop relationships with key stakeholders and work with cross-functional team to identify issues
  • Suggest solutions while working collaboratively to reach consensus and bring issues to resolution

QUALIFICATIONS:

Job qualifications include the following:

  • 3+ years of experience in an academic, research, or related setting with proven project management and data analysis experience
  • Master’s degree in epidemiology or closely related discipline such as biostatistics, biometry, public health, biological sciences, or related field preferred
  • Experience with SAS, R, STATA and/or RedCap highly desirable

  • Act as local escalation point for issues affecting the delivery of projects and facilitate the resolution of issues
  • Concise and effective verbal and written communication skills
  • High degree of professionalism and capacity to manage relationships with a variety of individuals in differing roles; impeccable judgment to handle sensitive information
  • Comfortable with ambiguity–works to resolve open questions, can define a process to resolve ambiguity, and comfortable that the plan may change as needed
  • Ensure alignment with Investigators and other Project Managers to enable delivery of complex projects

Analytical Skills

  • Intellectual curiosity and willingness to learn
  • Rigorous academic and/or professional background including quantitative work
  • Basic familiarity with health research
  • Ability to identify, gather, manage, and synthesize relevant information to support data-driven decisions

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Duties will be carried out in a typical office environment (can be performed remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic). Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

The candidate will be responsible for providing daily supervision, guidance, and expertise for a team of three to four Data Analysts.
