APPLICATION FOR SUMMER 2021 IS NOW OPEN!
APPLY TODAY!

The Summer Undergraduate Fellowship in Nonproliferation Studies at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS)—formerly the Monterey Institute of International Studies—is a paid fellowship. Fellows will be compensated at the same rate as graduate research assistants. Fellowships last between 2-3 months, from early June to late August. Fellows are responsible for finding housing, with the assistance of the Fellowship Coordinator.

*For the Summer 2021, given the uncertain situation due to the global pandemic COVID-19, there is a possibility that the program may be conducted remotely. We will make our decision in alignment with MIIS policy which continues to follow the guidance of state and country health authorities.

  • Knowledgeable of international security topics
  • Has command of a foreign language

Fellows work in close collaboration with CNS staff members on different nonproliferation issues. Listed below are the program areas available at our center:

  • Eurasia

  • International Organizations and Nonproliferation
  • Export Control and Nonproliferation
  • Middle East Nonproliferation

CNS is a pioneer in developing and applying “New Tools” in nonproliferation research and education. Our key techniques include open source information and computer modeling, namely the creative use of satellite imagery, geospatial data, 3-dimensional (3D) modeling, virtual reality environments, and social media platforms. Over the summer, fellows will have the opportunities to contribute to innovative nonproliferation projects for the Nuclear Threat Initiative website alongside a team of CNS experts.

To gain an idea of what CNS does, please take a look at a recent project by CNS experts that recreated the US Raven Rock Mountain Complex and Russia’s Kosvinsky Bunker using open source information.

“You can visit the Pentagon’s secret nuclear bunker inside Minecraft”

“It’s Nuclear War. Do you know where your leaders are”

Duties

In addition to assisting CNS experts with ongoing projects, our fellows get to develop their own research projects under the guidance of their respective supervisors. Also, fellows are expected to attend seminars and lectures held at CNS throughout the summer because this is an educational program. Fellows may have an opportunity to present results of their independent research as appropriate during the program.
