Asia Initiatives (AI) is a registered 501(c)(3) located in New York, with a chapter in Japan. Founded in 2000, the organization aims to promote sustainable development for underserved communities, with a particular focus on women and their families in India, Ghana, Kenya, the US and Costa Rica.
For too long, financial capital has been the one and only goals of poverty alleviation and development. This is one of the reasons for growing poverty and environmental degradation in the world today. As articulated by the UN Habitat, Social capital is the glue that holds communities together. Asia Initiatives has shown how Social Capital also leads to better stewardship of social and ecological capital. All three forms of capital are essential for holistic and sustainable development.
AI has worked in close collaboration with local partners to fund over 200 micro credit banks, establish 40+ village knowledge centers and support education and technology initiatives. Its partners include governments, non-profit organizations and corporations. AI has also innovated the concept of Social Capital Credits (SoCCs), the community currency for social good, to multiply the impact of every development dollar. This internship has a flexible start and end date, but would likely be over the summer with the possibility of extension.
