MIT Solve Internship with POKET
POKET (poketapp.com) is a mapping solution focused on using communities to generate location data/insights in emerging countries. Using our crowdsourced approach to data collection, POKET enables the rapid collection of GIS/POI/mapping data and insights across an area. The solution uses AI to screen bad data and rewards local community members for their inputs, creating new forms of work for youth during a time where unemployment is extremely high.
The POKET team has traditionally worked in the private sector. Their focus is on urban hubs in emerging cities (ex. South Asia, South America, Sub-Saharan Africa etc.), focusing on places that are traditionally unmapped. Examples of use-cases include mapping healthcare outlets, corner shops, food merchants, open markets, fire hydrants, city infrastructure, etc. however the team is open to exploring additional use-cases/insights in other regions.
The intern would focus on operations for launching our mapping platform remotely (ex. sitting in Boston and helping users in Dhaka, Bangladesh be able to map hospitals). It may also include creating materials for teaching people how to use the app, helping create strategies for recruiting mappers in different parts of the world remotely, re-designing UI/UX flows for our smartphone apps, helping verify some of the incoming location data, and helping manage communities of mappers.

- Experience in Operations, Business Strategy would be a very strong asset. Candidates who also have UI/UX experience and can share some of their work will have an edge! MBAs, business and/or UI/UX students preferred
This is unfortunately an unpaid internship with a small social enterprise. While we are unable to pay you for your time, we hope this will be a fun and valuable experience to get an inside look into the work of social entrepreneurs and an organization that is making an impact on the world. This internship has a flexible start and end date, but would likely be over the summer with the possibility of extension.
This internship is being hosted by MIT Solve. Solve is an initiative of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a mission to solve world challenges.
