Since 2012, the Nemours Office of Health Equity has been funding scholarships to current undergraduate students to learn about health disparities through summer research projects.
Thirteen scholarships are available this year:
The program is virtual based in Wilmington, DE (Eastern Time)
Each scholarship recipient receives a $4300 monetary award (stipend.)
The stipend in paid in installments and is contingent upon completion of all program requirements
Eligibility requirements include: 1) United States citizenship or legal permanent residency; 2) enrollment as an undergraduate student at the time the program starts (individuals who graduated prior to the start of the program are not eligible to apply)
This year the program begins June 7, 2021 and ends on August 13, 2021. Participation is required throughout the ten-week, full-time program.
The program schedule is 8:30 – 5:00pm M – F Eastern Time. for the duration of the internship.
Because of the rigorous nature of the program absences greater than three-days will not be granted; absences of any kind must be approved.
Individual projects are population based in nature and typically address pediatric health care disparities. Applicants are asked to rank their top three choices.

1. COVID-19 subpopulation variances in cumulative incidence and mortality in the US (CDC data set if available next year)
2. Cumulative Incidence, and Morality in COVID-19 among US Children (CDC dataset)
3. Racial/ethnic variability in the association between diabetes and hypertension; National Health Survey (2018/19)
4. implication of epigenomics in racial disparities in cardiovascular disease, preterm birth and cancer (breast, prostate,colon): systematic review & QES
5.Childhood Brain Injury and Low Birth Weight interaction predicts disproportionate burden of cerebral palsy among black/AA: National Survey of Children Health (2018) Mentors; Dabney K & Holmes, L Jr.
6. Racial and Sex Differentials in Pediatric Glioblastoma Survival : SEER (1975-2017)
7. Black-White Risk Differentials in Pediatric Ependymoma Survival: SEER (1975-2017)
8. American Indians/Alaska Native and Blacks/AA predict Low Relative Survival in Pediatric Astrocytoma: SEER (1973-2015)
9.Subpopulation aberrant epigenomic modulation of novel biomarkers in childhood obesity: Systematic Review and QES
10. Maternal Environmental and Clinico-pathologic factors interaction predict the survival disadvantage of perinatal mortality among blacks/AA

In this program participants are required to:
- Attend lectures and statistics clinics.
- Complete an individual project.
- Present findings to a large audience of associates and students’ families.
- Present posters to a variety of audiences.
- Actively participate and interact in journal club sessions.
- Work in a team setting including group projects.
Participants also have the option to:
- Attend grand rounds.
- Attend Nemours Sponsored events.
- Complete additional online trainings.

Application deadline is January 31, 2021.
If chosen applicants will be notified via email to schedule and interview. Final decisions will be made in mid-April 2021; applicants will be notified by email.
