Devin Alexander is the Manager of Strategic Partnerships for FirstStar.org in addition to being a Celebrity Chef and NY Times Bestselling Author. She’s looking for students to help her JUST THROUGH THE MONTH OF DECEMBER AND COMPLETELY ON YOUR OWN TIME AND VIRTUALLY spread the word about FirstStar.org with the goal of getting foster youth who would otherwise likely become statistics (homeless, sex trafficked (did you know that 70% of rescued sex trafficking victims are current or former foster youth) into college. They place them (beginning in their freshman year of high school, 1 month over the summers and 1 weekend every month during the school year) on one of 14 college campuses where they have “Academies” (UCLA being the closest) so they realized they “belong” in college. 3% of foster youth typically go to college. 91% of First Star Scholars (students) go!
FirstStar.org has a 97.17 (out of 100) rating on Charity Navigator because they have incredible success with nurturing foster youth into higher education (not padding the CEO’s wallet). They also offer microgrants for things like an “extra” month deposit on an apartment that will keep a student from homelessness — when a foster child tries to get his/her first apartment, he/she doesn’t have parents or a credit history to back them so landlords often don’t want to rent to them AT ALL. If they do, they generally expect a additional month deposit (beyond what they would expect of someone else). 🙁
Devin will train you (via zoom) and provide strategies and suggestions that will be great for your own future business efforts/endeavors. The ultimate goal is to raise money for the microgrants and to keep the Academies alive. But it’s not like a typical “fundraising position” because by telling people about it (ie: 77% of girls who age out of foster care get pregnant in 1 to 2 years and many of those kids become foster kids! And many of the kids end up in prison because they want to be in prison — their group homes had food as bad as prison and in foster homes it might have been worse — they have a warm bed in prison, as opposed to living on the streets — so sad but actually true!) I’ve found that people want to help if they are in a position to do so. We just need more people “telling”. By not helping kids, we’re funding all of the services needed for future foster kids (at $20K per month) and when they go to jail, it costs tax payers, $47K per inmate per year.
Why does a Celebrity Chef/Cookbook Author care so much??? Devin adopted a baby girl from the Los Angeles Foster Care system 4 years ago this week. Her daughter’s biological mom was a foster child who had a horrible life! In the process of adopting, get received an unexpected “education” about what really happens and how much these kids will cost us all — when we could HELP THEM! WOULD YOU LOVE TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION IN THIS SEASON OF GIVING? Lower crime, lower the homeless rate? Then please send us a note. We’d love you “on Team First Star”! Small commitment! Big Results! And if you have any success at all (you will if you’re willing to try!), Devin will happily write a letter of recommendation for future job endeavors.
Who wants to help us save children who were simply dealt a bad hand? Your involvement could be as simple as posting to your fraternity/sorority/social media and any other campus website after we give you the tools to do so. Or to spread the word to friends/family/businesses you know that have budget for end of the year donations, etc. We have plenty of suggestions for you….we just need you to help us be a microphone! For more info about the organization, go to FirstStar.org. All links you would post or share will be directly to FIRSTSTAR.org , NOT Devin’s. She’s just a messenger who is seeing more messengers like YOU! 🙂
