Do you love solving challenging problems, thinking in numbers and working in groups? Do you also have the self-motivation, curiosity, creativity and ability to persuade others toward meaningful results? Are you passionate about the clean energy transition? If yes, then join our growing team!

Position Overview

RMI is seeking one or more exceptional candidates to fill an Associate or Senior Associate position within the Strategic Engagement & Analysis (SEA) group, with a particular focus in the first year on supporting high-priority emergent opportunities for impact across RMI’s portfolio.

The SEA group’s mission is to catalyze and coordinate cutting-edge thought leadership activities at the edges and intersections of RMI programs. We apply systems-thinking approaches to the interlocking behavioral, technoeconomic, and institutional factors that influence the pace and direction of the energy transition and help the Institute develop a central view on pathways to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C.

The candidates we are seeking with this announcement would join the SEA group’s new rapid response team that works on special projects across RMI’s portfolio, particularly those that are emergent and quick turnaround but offer the opportunity for high-impact and high-leverage. The rapid response team sits within the SEA group and supports its global thought leadership work, but also works closely with RMI’s Chief Program Officer and the Co-Chairs of RMI’s Program Management Group on critical portfolio-level or cross-program opportunities.

Core Responsibilities

  • Work with internal and external teams to develop rigorous and critical analysis that helps envision a rapid transition to a clean energy future
  • Develop and execute creative and rigorous problem-solving approaches to drive project insight
  • Synthesize recommendations into clear and compelling presentations, written reports, or other deliverables, and present quantitative information in a clear, visual format
  • Convene and facilitate collaborative workshops; use RMI’s facilitation approach to develop new solutions and strategies
  • Engage with external clients and partners through dialogues, collaborative projects, and convenings

Minimum Qualifications for Associates

  • Graduate degree and/or 2+ years of relevant experience in an applicable field such as economics, engineering, business, public policy, environmental management, etc.

Minimum Qualifications for Senior Associates

  • Graduate degree and 4+ years of relevant experience in an applicable field such as economics, engineering, business, public policy, environmental management, etc.
  • Demonstrated technical understanding of topics such as renewable energy, building energy efficiency, sustainable transportation systems, urban planning, industry engagement, system dynamics, energy system planning and modeling

Additional Minimum Qualifications for Both Associates and Senior Associates

  • Strong quantitative and problem-solving skills, including the ability break down complex issues in a straightforward, logical manner and turn information into insight
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Intellectual curiosity, flexible mindset, and a willingness to plunge into unfamiliar disciplines and work through ambiguity
  • Ability to listen actively, be diplomatic, and work with diverse and fluid teams

RMI ensures thoughtful review of each candidate to determine the appropriate position level for all individuals and this will be communicated prior to the interview process.

Location

This position will remain remote through the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the COVID-19 situation improves, it is expected that candidates will live near one of RMI’s U.S. locations.

Compensation

The starting Associate level salary range is $68,000-$75,000, and the starting Senior Associate level salary is $76,500-$85,000, both with a 5% bonus target. The role and salary will be based on experience and qualifications that will be vetted through the interview process.

Benefits

We offer a comprehensive benefits package including:

  • Medical, Dental, Vision Insurance
  • 403b Retirement Options (5% match immediately)
  • Parental leave
  • Generous paid time off
  • Life, AD&D, Short-Term and Long-Term Disability
  • Commuter and Wellness Benefits
  • Casual Work Environment

Diversity

Increasing the diversity of thought, perspectives, ideas and opinions within RMI is a critical change element supporting our long-term sustainability and mission to build a clean, prosperous, and secure energy future.

We strive for a level of diversity that reflects the communities we serve. Achieving this—regardless of ability, race, ethnicity, ancestry, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, marital status, socioeconomic class, educational attainment or other social identities—is critical to the success of each RMIer and collectively as an organization, ensuring that we:

  • Strive for a culture of inclusion and belonging by treating others with dignity, respect and appreciation enabling them to feel welcomed, supported and valued.
